The ocean shapes the earths chemistry. It is the blue heart of the planet containing 97% of the earth's water and producing at least 50% of the planet's oxygen. The ocean is home to most of earth’s biodiversity. Humanity’s interconnectivity to the ocean is core to our identities, cultures, and ways of life. In the words of the legendary Sylvia Earle, “with every drop of water you drink, every breath you take, you’re connected to the sea.” A healthy ocean is a critical part of the solution to climate change and the environmental crises that we face today. A healthy ocean is not just an option - it is a necessity.
Villa Hotels and diveOceanus believe in the power of change and raising awareness for future generations. We recognize the collective responsibility to promote harmony with nature and pledge support for environmental protection and ocean preservation. Caring for the ocean is priority and raising awareness for future generations is key to preserving the blue heart of our planet. Celebrating Ocean’s Day serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our ocean is and how important it is to raise awareness and to protect it; is vital we work together to take action not only on World Ocean Day, but every day.
As part of Villa Hotels continuous pledge to help protect our natural environment, all of our Maldives resorts donate plastic for recycling as part of the partnership with Parley for the Oceans – an organization addressing major threats towards our oceans and fighting for environmental protection through recycling initiatives and global projects. In addition, all Villa Hotels have introduced reusable glass bottles throughout the resorts and on drive excursions as part of the pledge to eliminate plastic on the islands. DiveOceanus at Royal Island is Villa Hotels first 95% paperless dive centre with all training material, administration forms and material provided to guests done digitally.
Every small action makes a big change. Some small steps that we can all take on a daily basis to work towards a better future include reducing plastic consumption by switching to reusable bags and bottles, recycling as much as you can, reducing your carbon footprint by walking more instead of driving and always making a conscious effort to leave places better than you found them. Get involved where you can, volunteering to help organisations carrying out research and activities can be a powerful way to make a change and protect the natural environment. Spread the word. Knowledge is power and change.
In an effort to join the worldwide movement for the protection of the ocean, Villa Hotels are supporting the 30x30 nature petition to help protect 30% of the planet's land and ocean by 2030. We encourage our readers around the world to sign the petition so that world leaders will take action to protect our planet and our future.
